Why didn't Heath Ledger show up for the Academy Awards?

It sure must have been embaring for him sitting at him and hearing his name announced as the winner. I bet his family felt ackward accepting it and probably give him a good scolding when they got home. I'm surprised he didn't send an indian to get the award like Marlon Brando did.
